This is a reprint of his earlier edition of the book, first called "Making Folk Instruments in Wood" (published by Sterling), then "Making Wood Folk Instruments" (published by Music Sales Corp, below, same price). I believe there was also an edition published by Oak. As far as I know this is his only book on the subject, so if you already have one it's probably an earlier edition of this one. One of our members has confirmed that this book is the revised edition: some of the designs have been refined, and there are color pictures. The one below, however, is 160 pages long.

This book has been in print for years now. It has been translated from Spanish to English, German, Italian, etc. The book does not teach (as Cumpiano's) how to make guitars. It is a narrative of the life of Manuel Rodriguez as told by himself. Some good history of the guitar with names included. St. John is the sports writer for the Wall Street Journal, which is a little weird, but he knows his acoustic guitars, especially prewar Martins. He identifies Wayne Henderson as the premier builder of guitars in that tradition and spends a couple of months, on and off, in Henderson’s Virginia shop, eating sausage biscuits, jamming, and swapping fart jokes. He manages to get on Henderson’s 10-year waiting list for a guitar, convinces him to build a pair of OMs for Clapton (one to play, one to auction for the Crossroads Center), and pays homage to a true American craftsman. I don’t know if he ever uses the word “luthier.” St. John really captures the unique juxtaposition of Henderson’s modest lifestyle and some of the top-of-the-food-chain musicians he builds for. You can practically smell the Brazilian rosewood in the pages. Buy this one for yourself or give it as a gift. -- Bill Machrone

After beginning the book with a look at the types of sources availible to us and their reliability, Dr. Remnant goes on to discuss the ingredients that make up a bowed instrument.The instruments covered are: rebec, crowd, Mediaeval viol, fiddle, Renaissance viol and trumpet marine. She covers possible construction, tunings and use in that period. Much of this is derived from her study of carvings, paintings and manuscripts since there is very little in the way of actual surviving instruments. There is a large section of photographs illustrating her original source material. The book gives instructions about how to make a dulcimer, guitar, banjo, lute as well as many other stringed instruments that look like precursers to the banjo. For a few, such as the guitar and spike fiddle, it gives a couple of pages of step by step instructions. For most instruments it is a picture and a few words of description. The detail is lacking because it covers a lot of ground. It starts with every kind of percussion possible. It touches on assorted shakers, gongs, chimes, rain stick, even a few variations of a kalimba. Then it moves on to skin covered drums and a kazoo. The xylophone with gourd resonators is particularly interesting. The book winds up with a chapter about wind instruments. Trumpets, whistles and flutes. Also, several types of reed instruments. If you have a snake to charm this book would come in very handy. The strength of "Making Gourd Musical Instrument" is to show you what is possible, not how to do anything. If you have already built a guitar or mandolin then you probably have the skills to build a gourd instrument without the book. Even so, it is an interesting book that I think is worth the purchase price. The instruments are just a bit more "folksy" than I had in mind. --Dwight Johnson

A very good introduction to vibration theory. Intended for first or second year undergraduates, it requires a knowledge of elementary calculus and basic mechanics, but does a good job of building up from fairly simple principles. Instead of just throwing in the harmonic oscillator equation it also goes into forced oscillations, resonances, coupled oscillators, wave packets, boundaries and all that good stuff. There are nice clear discussions of the physical concepts leading to and resulting from all the math. Most of it is limited to one dimensional problems so the equations never get too hairy. --Robert Callaghan

This book centers mainly on artists' materials and their applications, with a nod to the technical characteristics of materials. There's a lot of overlap with Gettens and Stout's "Painting Materials: A Short Encyclopedia" (below), Mayer being less technical and more practical, Gettens and Stout having more to do with chemistry and numbers. Mayer is especially good for someone looking for crossover ideas from other arts to instrument making, wheras G&S is better for someone who already has more familiarity with the techniques of the various arts and is just looking for characteristics of the materials. Though most non-artist instrument makers would find Mayer more user-friendly, G&S is priced so low there's just no reason to not own it and read it. --Michael Darnton

It covers most everything you could think of that could apply to a professional instrument making business, whether individual, partnership or small company. Of particular interest to the luthier would be the sections on business structure, consignment, warranties, reducing taxes, operating the business in your home, (or in a separate shop on your land) from both a tax point of view and local ordinances, getting paid (can't forget that!), hazard and liability insurance, and possible commercial leases. There are no specific luthiery (lutherie?) examples given but it's easy to make the transfer conceptually. It also lists examples of many different legal forms in an appendix at the end of the book. Having said that, this book will not replace an accountant or a lawyer and is not intended to; it does however lay out a lot of detail in concise language, not legalese, and I found it easy to understand. This is a short book about a family of builders and collectors of musical instruments. Upon the dissolution of the R.S.Williams Company (1931), the private collection of viols and historically important other instruments, letters, portraits, were donated to the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Canada. The past curator of the Central European Department, and author, Ladislav Cselenyi-Granch wrote this historical account. R.S.Williams jr. was the consummate collector. He travelled Europe extensively and had a long and fruitful relationship with W.E. Hill and Sons of London, England. Only first rate instruments were traded and as a result, important examples of Italian, French, English, German makers were aquired. This book points to that collection and reveals their location. These instruments are there to be admired and studied by professional makers and amateur music lovers alike. The book sadly lacks any images of the collection itself. As to who would be inclined to purchase this book, I would think those owning a Williams piano, organ, guitar or other instrument and wanting the connection to the past. Secondly. people who enjoy biographies. Since Canadian dollars are worthless, I found it a good value at $20.00 can.(or cheaper). --Roman Tarnovetsky
